'It's like they never miss a pass': Swansea's Galbraith renews battle with Pep's side.

Ethan Galbraith can't help but smile as he recalls the thrilling final moments of Swansea's remarkable turnaround triumph against Nottingham Forest in the League Cup. The game ended with Galbraith picking up a supporter's spectacles after the on-field celebration.

As the match entered added time, Galbraith rattled the woodwork with a powerful effort from outside the box, and his teammate promptly slammed home the loose ball before racing off toward the home end to mark the goal, with the crowd mobbing the players.

Extraordinary Turnaround

The result capped an extraordinary recovery given the Welsh side had trailed 2-0 deep into the second half. In the delirium, there was some minor mishaps. The midfielder recalled, "There was a spectator trying to get our attention and myself and Keysy [Josh Key] were wondering: 'What's he on about here?' Then we saw the glasses. It was a bit of banter putting them on. We are on the pitch as footballers but we're individuals, too, so to have a joke with the fans is always good."

Manchester City Challenge

The result earned a next round match at home against Pep Guardiola's side on Wednesday, opponents Galbraith came close against at the equivalent round of the FA Cup with his former club in February. The athletic midfielder had a prime vantage point when his former team took the lead in stunning style, with Jamie Donley's first-time shot from about way out going in via the woodwork and the Stefan Ortega. It seems unfair that it was recorded as an own goal.

"You would have expected they would've given it to him for taking the effort on from that far out," stated Galbraith, who started in midfield before shifting to right defensive wing after they changed shape. That meant getting to grips with Jack Grealish, with whom he swapped shirts, and the winger was among the Manchester squad who complimented the way Orient played positively.

Guardiola's System

"Athletically they are very good but even the simple things and basic skills, they can just do it over and over again," Galbraith says. "It seems as if they always find their target and they know how to control and neutralize a game. You can believe you're all right and then abruptly they will just fizz a pass between defenders without you even seeing. You have to be alert at all times of the game. It demands a tough attitude and focus just to remain competitive."

Swansea Move

The Welsh side sought to acquire Galbraith in January and beat off competition to bring him in in the summer in a £1.5m deal. He established himself as a popular figure across multiple campaigns at his former club and has swiftly done the same in Wales. At the London club he linked up again with Richie Wellens, who four years ago gave Galbraith his initial sustained opportunity in professional games on loan at a League One side from United. Then came a loan at League Two the Manchester club, before he permanently left Old Trafford.

Learning Curve

"I was probably a bit naive going into senior level. I think many athletes would say youth team games is completely distinct. Sometimes it appears play is circulated without much intensity. You see few physical contests. Once you start playing professional matches you have to adjust fast."

National Team Success

He has shown that maturation for his team and nation, excelling for Northern Ireland, who remain in contention for the international competition next summer via the knockout phase and for whom he has been selected in the last several matches, including home and away encounters against the German national team. His former international manager, Galbraith's ex- international manager, paid him the ultimate compliment, saying he was Northern Ireland's "little Iniesta or Xavi" given how he controls possession and his eye for a killer pass.

Early Days

It has been quite the ride for the youngster from the Queens Park estate in Glengormley, just outside the capital, who used to see his dad, Stuart, also a midfielder, play for a local club.

Red Devils Debut

His only game for the Red Devils came in Kazakhstan in 2019, a Europa League trip to Astana, where they featured on an artificial pitch and the stadium roof was shut owing to conditions of freezing cold. "This represented a extended travel and it was chilly," he says, smiling. "The days leading up, the academy prospects trained together, so that helped us acclimatise. Just to accompany the senior squad and earn some playing time at the end was incredible."

Departing Old Trafford

How hard was it to depart Manchester United, the club he joined from Linfield aged his mid-teens? "It was relatively straightforward, because I arrived at the moment where I realized I wasn't going to make it at first-team level. I'm hugely grateful for the time I spent there but it became apparent where I thought I needed to go my own route, move to a lower level and play professional soccer. Now I'm slowly working my way back up."

Welsh Adaptation

It is mid-afternoon at the club's training ground but Galbraith has an appointment at the early evening: a learner's exam, another move in the direction of getting on the road. Prior to relocating to Sketty, the mid-twenties player was a regular in Swansea's dubbed fun bus, a minibus driven by academy staff, Pete and Howard, which ferries players to and from practice and games.

"My companions include the Portuguese player, another squad member, an Ivorian player – Melker Widell used to be in it but has begun using his own car. It's pleasant to spend time with the lads but I'm hoping to be the next one out of the minibus and behind the wheel. His teammate enjoys practical jokes; he's always up to all sorts."

Supporter Connections

While playing for Orient, Galbraith would travel alongside fans on London's Central line after starting his journey at his base. "I tried|I attempted|My aim
